Single Layer DVDs Vs. Double Layer DVDs

When DVDs first started becoming popular, there was no such thing as double layer DVDS. The technology at the time simply had the single choice - single layer DVD. Many DVD burners when they first came out were very expensive and because of that only a few people were able to afford them. The discs that were available for them were also very expensive.

Because of this technology snag, the DVD revolution was slow to expand across the world. In the beginning there were also two DVD formats that were battling for world power and acceptance. DIVX was another media format that was trying to become the norm for the industry. The choice back then wasn't so much about single layer DVDs vs. double layer DVDs, but rather which format to choose - DIVX or DVD?

Well as many of us know now, DVD won the war for industry adoption and many companies were soon burning movies to this format as quickly as they could. It's only in the past few years that DIVX has become an accepted media format that can be found on many of the newer DVD players and computers.

Single layer DVDs vs. double layer DVDs has been a subject of much discussion lately due to the difference in the storage amounts. A regular DVD can easily hold 4.7 Gigabytes of information - which just happens to be the amount of data that a high-quality movie requires on a disc.

Many computer and video console games also burn their games to DVD format due to this high-storage ability. Access is another reason for using DVDs as any information on a DVD can be quickly accessed anywhere on the disc. This is important when the information is very detailed, such as high-resolution photographs or other images.

When people talk about single layer DVDs vs. double layer DVDs they may have the wrong idea in mind. Many people think that a double layer DVD means that the disc is burned onto two sides of the disc. While it's true that some DVDs and CDs are burned on both sides, those are specially created discs made for that purpose.

Sometimes one side of the disc will have a regular screen movie while the other side has a wide screen version of the same movie. One side may have special features while the other side may have interviews with stars or directors. This allowed a great deal of freedom for people who were creating the DVDs.

What is actually meant by single layer DVDs vs. double layer DVDs is that when a disc is burned, the laser that actually burns the data into the DVD does so on one layer, across the face of the disc. A double layer disc has two separate focal points for the laser to burn information onto the disc, kind of like making a double-decker sandwich with meat on one layer and cheese and lettuce on the other separate layers.
